Helen Mirren has admitted she was mortified by reports that claimed she was too busy to have dinner with the Queen.

The Oscar-winning actress - who played Her Majesty in ‘The Queen’ says she tried to rearrange the shooting of her new film National Treasure: Book of Secrets to meet Her Majesty, but it was not possible.

Mirren denied she snubbed the Queen’s invitation to Buckingham Palace.

She explained she was working on the film in the Black Hills of South Dakota with Nicolas Cage.

She told the New York Posts:

I am mortified. I just could not shut all that down to take three days off to go to Buckingham Palace.

In her Oscar acceptance speech after being named best actress in February, Mirren paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth, 80, as a woman who for half a century has maintained her dignity, her sense of duty, and her hairstyle.

Buckingham Palace said after the awards that it was looking at a number of options for a visit by Mirren, director Stephen Frears and writer Peter Morgan.
